Koktebel Jazz Festival is Ukraine’s largest open air jazz festival. Prior to the Russian occupation of the Crimea every year it was held in the small village Koktebel on the Black Sea coast, at the foot of Karadag Mountain. The year before, the organizers moved it to Zatoka (Odessa region). And in 2016 the festival will be first held in Chernomorsk near Odessa.
History
The festival Jazz Koktebel was held in the Crimea in 2003 on the initiative of the ideologist and founder Dmitry Kiselev (Russia) and the permanent head of the organizing committee Lilies Mlinarich (Ukraine) “in contrast to the dominance of bad musical taste rushing at us from television screens and newspaper pages”. Last year, the organizers of the “Jazz Koktebel” presented its new project – a festival of contemporary art – ARTISHOCK. It has affected all types and genres of contemporary art from the land art and light art to literature and independent cinema.
What to expect this year?
The organizers are confident that the festival will be the marker for the growth of freedom, rebirth and happiness of Ukrainian cities. This year the festival will take place in the city with an updated story and name, which was formerly known as Ilyichevsk, and now has the name of Chernomorsk.
In 2016 the festival Jazz Koktebel will be held from 25 to 28 August. It will be 4 days of freedom, inspiration, creativity, new ideas and perfect sense. Among the participants in 2016, the festival will host: Submotion Orchestra, Kadebostany, Max the Sax, The Bad Plus, Blue Foundation, Garden City Movement, Sergei Babkin, The Erised, Boom Pam, Tonbruket, Beissoul & Einius, Panivalkova and others.

One more bright performance and one more silver medal for Ukraine at Rio 2016 Olympic Games!
Yesterday, the 10th of August, Ukrainian gymnast Oleg Verniaiev performed at the Rio Olympic Arena. The result is impressive: our sportsman was really close to getting a gold medal, but the final scoreboard showed that Uchimura is beating Verniaiev by just 0.099 points.
Verniaiev had done his best in case that he was competing with Kohei Uchimura – gymnast, considered by many to be the greatest gymnast of all time. He is a seven-time Olympic medalist in all-around, team, and floor exercise, a 19-time World medalist (all-around, team, floor, high bar, and parallel bars) and he had won three golds and four silvers.
At the stage of Rio Olympic Arena was hot competitive atmosphere: Verniaiev led from the second rotation on, answering every time it seemed Uchimura was ready to take over. When Uchimura drilled a 15.566 on vault, Verniaiev got the result 15.5. Uchimura ended a high-flying set with a result 15.8, and Oleg Verniaiev needed a 14.9 to win Ukraine`s first all-around Olympic title and bring a gold medal to the Motherland. But instead he got 14.8. The total result for Uchimura is 92.365, and our Ukrainian sportsman got the second place in the competition with the total result 92.266 – there is a tiny gap, 0.1 gap.
Anyway, Japanese and Ukrainian gymnasts made an amazing show and as Oleg Verniaiev said, Uchimura really deserved the gold. However, Uchimura said, that he really had no confidence that he would be able to beat Oleg in the future. “I’m quite happy I managed to make Kohei nervous,” Verniaiev said with a laugh. And not only sportsmen were nervous. Beinside team supports Ukraine at Rio 2016 Olympic Games and we are proud about such a great results of Ukraine Team!

Secret places are always the most inspiring and interesting. Sometimes one inconspicuous door can hide incredible mysteries and lead to an unexpected place where you can listen to medieval music, where local intellectuals discuss important cultural and social projects, where you can find modern Ukrainian cuisine and the first 100% Ukrainian bar. It’s all about Ukrainian restaurant Last Barricade (Ostannya Barricada).
In fact, long ago «Ostannya Barricada» was the first Ukrainian art-club, created by Oles Dony. Modern «Ostannya Barricada», created by famous restaurateur Dmitro Borisov, follows the same principles – it’s devoted to the development of Ukrainian culture and exploration of Ukrainian history. It is an art and gastronomic space and a museum dedicated to 3 Ukrainian revolutions – Revolution on the Granite, Orange Revolution and Euromaidan (Revolution of dignity).
It is not easy to get here, but watchful guest will find tips and the entrance. Just remember – Lyadsky gate is a point to start. At the entrance you will see a small coffee place and nothing more. Don’t make a mistake, don’t stop – it is only the beginning. If you give the word door will open and you get further: you’d overcome the “iron curtain” and finally get to the cozy rooms and see the walls with plenty of artifacts dedicated to key moments of the modern history of Ukraine.
A small stage is a place where poets and musical groups perform. It’s maybe one of the best places to listen to authentic Ukrainian music.
What can you taste here?
Of course, it’s a place to taste Ukrainian food. If you think that Ukrainian cuisine is all about varenyky (a kind of ravioli with different fillings) and borscht (red beetroot soup), you are mistaken. Of course, you can order here tasty borscht and varenyky (with duck, potatoes and goose liver, with stewed kid, with cherry and even with halva), but that’s not all. For example, you can taste Ukrainian oysters and Ukrainian Black caviar, fried veal brains and bull testicles (“mountain oysters”) with cranberries, steaks, Chicken Kiev, fish soup, Kyiv cake and more. Prices are very reasonable. For example, if you order Ukrainian oysters + potato salad with trout + Chicken Kiev + dumplings with cherries, you pay a little over $ 10.
Also pay attention to the huge collection of Ukrainian cheeses, meat specialties, and 8-10 kinds of bread, which is baked right here.
Ukrainian Bar is also worth your attention – you can taste Ukrainian liqueurs, whiskey or Ukrainian version of calvados and special cocktails made of Ukrainian alcoholic beverages.
Also there is a shop where you can buy Ukrainian pottery, vyshyvanka, books, Ukrainian ethnic jewelry and works by contemporary artists.
It’s a place full of emotions and symbols. Beinside highly recommends!

History: from past until modern times
The idea of organizing and holding the powerful extreme music festival Carpathian Alliance Metal Festival on the slopes of the Carpathians was born quite a long time ago, but only in 2011 organizers had been able to hold a number of activities and negotiations for its implementation.
The project covers such music areas as FOLK/PAGAN/VIKING/BLACK METAL and others. And in 2011 it was held not in the valley or forest, but directly on one of the most amazing peaks of the Ukrainian Carpathians – a mountain called ‘Vysoky Verkh’, at an altitude of more than 1000 meters above sea level, among the gray virgin forests, mist and heavy clouds.
In 2015 the festival moved to the city of Lviv, and was held at the recreation center “Lviv Switzerland”.
Starting from 2016 festival will be held in the capital city of Ukraine – Kiev in the ‘Druzhby narodiv’ park. Much more musical styles will be added this year, thus it will expand the audience and scale of the festival. Knights’ tournament will be held during the Carpathian Alliance Metal Festival, so it’s a good possibility to see a medieval battle. Additionally, visitors can relax on the beach, which will be located on the territory of the festival, or swim in the river. Official dates are 29-31 July.
Here is a promo video of the upcoming event, watch it and make a right decision!
The program includes:
– Full-contact fighting in the shield/sword nominations
– Street theater
– Vintage Dance (demonstrations and workshops for everyone)
– Authentic masters’ fair

Eurovision Song Contest started 60 years ago as an ambitious project that was supposed to be broadcasted in more than 20 European countries. It goal was to share works of musicians and singers from a various cultural background and to have a broadcasting unit that would unite people living in different parts of Europe.
The idea seems to work well. Since the day of its first broadcasting, there was not a single year, when Eurovision Song Contest didn’t show up. It is the longest-running TV program in the world, which involves nearly 50 participating countries and is broadcasting on four continents. In 2015 in addition to all European countries, Australia also joined the contest. Ukraine started its participation in Eurovision in 2003, and right the next year the country won the first prize. Ruslana with her energetic ‘Wild dances’ based on Ukrainian folk motives literally shook the whole contest and obviously won the prize.
In 2005 Kyiv hosted the 50th Eurovision Contest. After Ruslana’s great success many other participants brought energetic folk motives in their shows which made Kyiv’s contest special.
On the 60th Contest in Stockholm this year Ukraine was first again, with Jamala’s song ‘1944’. The song tells the story of downtrodden Crimean Tatar people, who were deported from their home places by Stalin’s regime.
Despite all the claims, prior to the day of the contest, that ‘1944’ is ‘too sad’, ‘too slow’ and ‘too political’ to win the contest, Jamala showed an absolute opposite of that, bringing Eurovision to Ukraine again.
Today six Ukrainian cities are competing for the right to host next year’s show. They are Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Kherson. The voting is open now, and on 20th of July, Ukrainian National TV and radio will broadcast a ‘City Battle’ program, City Battle where each of the six mentioned cities’ delegates will show their proposal to the audience. Surely with any of them winning, the 2017 contest will be an awesome event both for Ukraine and whole Europe.
There is something that unites Kyiv, Perth, Mexico, Detroit, Sicily and many other places all over the world. A touch left there by famous Ukrainian artistic duo ‘Interesni Kazky’. AEC and Waone (in their previous life Aleksei and Vladimir) started their street-art ‘career’ with style writings on Kyiv’s walls in a bunch of Ukrainian creative painters Ingenious Kids. Some of their works might have being considered as a vandalism, however, this was an integral experience for AEC and Waone.
When started as an independent duo, two painters switched from traditional graffiti to beautiful and meaningful images. They call their own works ‘paranoias’ and characters they paint ‘strokes’. To make the very first works of ‘Interesni kazki’ (Interesting Fairy tales, Ukrainian), AEC and Waone worked as interior designers to earn some money to buy the paint.
Now artists are strongly desirable all around the world. Their works are not only about technique, incredible colors and funny noticeable details. Painters dig into each country’s culture essence; point all the valuable (sometimes shameful and painful) parts in a satiric manner, to help the society SEE.
Whether it’s the story of aborigines in Australia or a manifesto to Ukrainian revolution, the works of AEC and Waone will surely remain in your memory straight after you see them.
Almost everyone has probably heard about the most successful game of recent times – Pokemon Go!
What is it?
This is a multiplayer game developed by American programmers and released on the 6th of July 2016. A feature of Pokémon Go is the imposition of virtual images on real-world images. The game encourages travelling the streets to search and hunt for Pokemon, go out and chat with other players. Thereby such common problems of youth as a sedentary lifestyle and being unsocial in the real world are overcoming in this way.
This mainstream didn’t omit Kiev as a city of new trends and activities. Nowadays the streets are full of crazy people walking with their cellphones and trying to catch a Pokemon. A lot of bloggers make videos about this game and show their proficiency. There is even a possibility to employ using a good knowledge of Pokemon Go. For example, if you have expertise in the game and appropriate experience in digital marketing, you can apply for a vacancy as a Pokemon Go expert for a 1 000$ salary.
A popularity of the game
Within a week the game became popular and gained a huge number of downloads. The number of installations in Google Play was more than 10 million, but the total number was greater because some users install specially hacked version.
According to the data of Sensor Tower company at the end of the week, the average time of daily use of Pokémon Go was more than 33 minutes. This is more than the average daily use of Facebook (22 minutes per day), Snapchat (18 minutes) and Twitter (17 minutes).
PokemonGo in Kiev!
All the newspapers and online magazines in Kiev write about the game, best gamblers and new records. But Beinside decided to describe Pokemon Go in a new style. Forget about Pokemons and transform your imagination to more cultural prospects. Just imagine: you follow the route on your cell phone and instead of Pokemon you see Richard the Lionheart suddenly appears on Adriivsky descent. Is it a good idea?
Or for example, you are currently on Sophiyska square near Bogdan Khmelnytskiy monument and after a while you see him appearing in front of the monument.
Will you be surprised with these unexpected postures? Let’s say this kind of game is going to be much more interesting and useful for sure in terms to be enriched and more educated. And this is what Beinside actually wants to bring you: help you transfer into the events of past times and immerse into the atmosphere of Kiev history. If you find it useful and curious, don’t hesitate to contact us and book a tour!
